My name is Lisa Hjelmstad, MSW, LCSW, LMFT, LAC.    I bring to my practice more than thirty years of experience working in the field of mental health, addictions, criminal justice social work, and child protection.  I offer mental health and substance abuse services to children, adults and families.  Individual, family, and group sessions are available.   I have specialized certification and training to provide trauma intervention and crisis services, including Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy  (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  I am a Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work Program Educator offering premarital and marriage workshops and counseling services.   I offer Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) and DAC evaluations for those working with their employers to resolve the return to duty process for both DOT and Non-DOT safety sensitive positions.   I am a Qualified Substance Abuse Professional under DOT regulations.

As a clinical social worker, I use evidence based practices and mutual relationship to help enhance social functioning and create more manageability for others seeking assistance.  I believe in creating an opportunity for healing by offering care, support, validation and respect.  Healing and self directed change occurs within a therapeutic relationship between myself and the individual(s) seeking assistance.  The relationship and healing process is governed by both the science (knowledge) and art of intervention (skill) and is constantly evolving to reflect the outcome and growth one wishes to experience.

Psychotherapy offers an opportunity for teaching, learning, and healing, not only for patients, but for myself and my practice.    I am honored to have the opportunity on a daily basis to grow with those courageous individuals who are creating greater wellness and care in their lives.   Healing is measured by changes in thinking, feeling, and being.

I approach therapy from a holistic perspective, addressing overall physical, emotional, mental, spiritual well being and balance.  Healing and change in any one individual impacts a larger community as well.   I welcome the opportunity to participate in impacting your community in a meaningful way.

We have many influences, barriers, or challenges that can create distress or wounds in our life.   Sometimes we just need support to make small adjustments to be better equipped to handle these stressors; other times we need to establish a safe relationship in which to heal from deep seated losses and injuries.   I am excited about the prospect of working with you in either capacity for healing and wellness.

Invest in yourself and your family.  Call our office today!  Together we can work to overcome challenges you may be facing.   I can provide a free confidential phone consultation!

"It seldom happens that a man changes his life through his habitual reasoning. No matter how fully he may sense the new plans and aims revealed to him by reason, he continues to plod along in old paths until his life becomes frustrating and unbearable—he finally makes the change only when his usual life can no longer be tolerated."  Leo Tolstoy

Humor

by Lisa Hjelmstad, LCSW, LMFT, LAC on 07/22/12

Humor is a gift I share in my relationships today.   Laughter is the way it travels.  A thought and a smile is where it all starts.   Today I am truly blessed to be able to share this gift with others in my life.  I am particularly thankful to share it with my husband, children, family, and friends.

At different points in my life, humor has not come quite as easily as it does today.   A shadowing darkness of fear jaded my ability to laugh freely and share my smiles.  In my journey through life and learning, I have had any number of teachers show me how the idea of humor begins and spreads in colors blending my life together in a patchwork of designs.

I understand humor today as a great tool for building flexibility, reassurance, and acceptance.   Instead of building great serious and rigid walls of beliefs by which to define my life, I hope to continue to hang wide open doors for living shaded in sheer curtains of humor, passion, and delight.   What a freedom to move forward with construction with a detached sense of vulnerability and naivety.

Private practice is giving me an opportunity to take humor in myself in a way that I haven't experienced before.  I have to let go of the weight, the fear and the barriers to move with fluidity, flexibility and humor across, under, and around challenges new and old.  I will let light in through the practice of humor and this is the framework by which I will put forth my first attempts at blogging !
